When to Go

Generally, cruise rates tend to be lowest for sailings from October–December. However, discount cruises are pervasive in year-round destinations, such as the Caribbean.

High Peak Seasons
Higher rates typically occur during peak cruising times, such as the summer months. In peak periods, be sure to book early due to the limited number of cabins.

Medium Peak Seasons
You’ll find fares that are somewhere in the middle during these time periods.

Off-Peak Seasons
Cruise fares often drop during the off-peak times for specific regions.

  • Where to Go by Seasons
Seasons of the year also play a factor when selecting the right time to cruise:
  • FALL
If you enjoy fall foliage, consider a September or October cruise to the east coasts of the U.S. and Canada.
(Note: Early fall is hurricane season in the Caribbean, Hawaii, and Mexico; however, cruise lines can easily change course to avoid a storm.)
    WINTER
Exchange cold weather for some sun! Winter is a popular time to cruise to the Bahamas, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
    SPRING
Spring break cruises abound in the Bahamas and Mexico. In addition, it’s a great time to visit the Mediterranean.
    SUMMER
The cool climate of Alaska attracts a high concentration of travelers in the summer months.
  • Find cruise deals during Wave Season
January–March is cruising “Wave Season.” It’s when cruise lines showcase their best deals for the coming year. It’s also a great time to get the best value for your money.
  • Save with a repositioning cruise
Another option to consider is a repositioning cruise, where a ship relocates to a new destination. The upside? More days at sea and a chance to cruise for less.

Which Itinerary for Me?
The "Carnival Destiny" in port
Itineraries can range from two nights to more than 20 nights. First time cruisers often select shorter itineraries and weekend getaways, while seasoned cruisers opt for longer routes.
  • Sea vs. port days
Whether you enjoy lots of activity or just time on the open ocean, there’s a cruise for you. More sea days equals more time on board. Consult your itinerary to determine the number of sea days you’ll have and plan accordingly.
  • Shore excursions
From wave runners in the Bahamas to glacier hikes in Alaska, each port features its own unique activities and excursions. Please visit our Shore Excursions page to learn more.
  • Other factors
Consider your schedule and budget when planning your cruise. Also, be sure to consider the cost of air travel in your planning.
