This Central American country is known for its sandy Caribbean beaches, ancient Mayan ruins, relaxed pace of life and dive-friendly waters.

Belize is known for biodiversity and beautiful coastlines. Go diving in the crystal-clear waters, discover ancient Mayan monuments and go hiking through peaceful natural settings. Head into the jungle in search of Belize’s fascinating wildlife, including howler monkeys and colorful bird species.

Scuba divers will find themselves enchanted with the Belize Barrier Reef. With more than 400 islands, seven key marine zones and over 500 species of fish, this is a dive you won’t want to miss. Take a tour of the Great Blue Hole, a submarine sinkhole with stalactites and native sharks. Venture to the furthest offshore reef, Lighthouse Reef, for wonderfully intact coral. Snorkelers are also welcome in the area.

Head to northern Belize to find tranquil villages and ancient Mayan waterways. Along Corozal Bay is the scenic town of Corozal, where you can explore an old sugar factory, see the Cerros Ancient Maya Site or go sport fishing off the coast. Journey out to the Northern Islands to indulge in rum, sun and fresh fish in Caye Caulker.

Travel to the southeast coast, where pristine, palm-lined beaches provide the perfect space for relaxing. Meet the local Garifuna community in Hopkins, a town where the rest of the world seems to disappear as everyone dances and drums along to the beat. In the Maya Mountains, take a trip to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, which houses endangered jaguars in its rainforests.

To get around Belize, travel by bus. To head out to the northern islands, take a ferry from Belize City. For smaller islands, private transportation often needs to be pre-arranged.

Belize enjoys the best beach weather from January to April when the skies are at their sunniest. If you are willing to embrace the rain, June through October is a fantastic time for low-priced accommodations.

While many tourists spend all their time on the coastline, western Belize promises a wealth of ancient Mayan sites such as Caracol and Xunantunich, as well as thrilling jungle treks.
