Nestled amid flourishing countryside away from the beach resorts of Baja California Sur, is the hill town of Santiago. Avocado, mango and orange orchards surround the town and the granite peaks of the Sierra de la Laguna rise up in the distance.
Santiago grew up around a mission founded in the 1700s and today is an important supplier of fresh produce to the East Cape beach resorts. Wander the sleepy streets, be part of a religious celebration and swim in freshwater pools.
Arriving from the south you’ll pass the Tropic of Cancer Monument. Stop to take a photo next to the monument and then continue across an often dried-up river to the town center. Sit on a tree-shaded bench at Plaza Santiago, where local children play games and friends meet to chat.
From the main square a street leads to the Santiago Mission Church. Built in the 20th century, it stands on the site of the earlier mission. Admire the colorful colonial-style exterior, the twin bell towers and a façade decorated with pilasters and a painting that portrays a biblical scene. Locals congregate here in July to celebrate the feast of St. James, who is the town’s patron saint.
Just a short drive from Santiago and in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range are a collection of hot springs. El Chorro Hot Springs and Santa Rita Hot Springs are perfect for relaxing while enjoying the encompassing natural beauty. For more adventure, hike to Cañon De La Zorra, where a waterfall spills down a rock face into a sheltered swimming hole.
Santiago is easy to reach on a daytrip from the coastal towns of Buenavista and Los Barriles. It’s also less than a 2-hour drive from Cabo San Lucas, one of the busiest resorts in the Baja California peninsula.
Very clean and beds are comfortable. Good option for one night stay close to the airport.
The view of the beach is spectacular! The hotel is very nice and the staff helpful
Beautiful location and walkable distance to shops, restaurants and transportation rentals. Our room was facing the pool, which also had an ocean view, and this was an amazing sight to wake up to in the morning. This is a bit smaller than your normal hotel, so the gift shop/office has set hours and ...
Situated on the beach, this luxury hotel is 0.2 mi (0.3 km) from La Ribera Beach and within 9 mi (15 km) of Buena Vista Beach and Punta Colorada Beach. Cabo Pulmo Marine Reserve and Punta Arena Lighthouse are also within 12 mi (20 km).
The Hotel Buenavista Beach Resort offers a beautiful tranquil setting. The views from the outdoor dining area overlooking the Sea Of Cortez are stunning. The swim up bar is the perfect place to cool down after a warm day on the Sea, and a great place to commensurate with fellow fishermen. Have them ...
Situé à 10 minutes de l’aéroports. Belle piscine. Environnement propre. La douche avait une excellente pression et il y avait de l’eau chaude. Le seul irritant que nous avons constaté est que la climatisation était bruyante.
I truly enjoyed my stay there. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating. It is not a fancy resort hotel, but perfect for my needs. When I checked out and finally arrived home in L.A. I realized that I had left behind some very important papers. I called the hotel and the manager "Jesus" located ...
They did honor my reservation and I had to drive almost 2 hours to the next town to get a Hotel room
