Following the founding of the Charlotte Hornets in 1988, the team relocated to New Orleans in 2002 but kept the name Hornets until 2013. After earning a winning inaugural season, the following years were met by hardship with 3 straight losing seasons and a temporary move to Oklahoma City in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The team saw their greatest period of success beginning in 2007 after the signing of future NBA All-Star and Rookie of the Year Chris Paul. They appeared in the playoffs 3 of the next 4 years and took the Southwest Division title in 2008. They went on to make it into the Conference Semifinals but ultimately lost to the San Antonio Spurs.
In 2013, the New Orleans Hornets announced they would rebrand as the Pelicans, returning the name, records, and official team history back to Charlotte, where a team called the Bobcats had been playing since 2004. Today, after having lost Chris Paul, the Pelicans are attempting to work their way back up the conference. They’ve only made a single playoff appearance since 2012 but are building out a roster around towering Anthony Davis, adding players like DeMarcus Cousins, Rajon Rondo, and Emeka Okafor.
